Interested in getting more involved with Minnesota Steelheader?
We have an ever growing list of projects, programs and events that we are working on. Are you interested in giving back to the fishery?  We have a few opportunities where streamside angler volunteering is the power behind the program.  Looking for some mentoring or streamside assistance?  Maybe a simple steelheading 101 seminar, or some technical insight?

Many of our programs and events have opportunities for anglers like you!  Check back often as we will be adding several new programs and events in the not too distant future. Click on each link below to discover more about what Minnesota Steelheader has to offer.

Adopt - A - River Program
Join our annual clean team
compiled of all sorts of anglers.

We need anglers like you to
help keep our steelheading
rivers clean.

Fall Stream-side Clinic
A wonderful event for all beginner to intermediate anglers interested in learning more about our North Shore fishery, the fish that swim our waters, and some techniques on how to catch them.  This is all done annually on a beautiful North Shore River.

Steelhead Genetics Project
This is an ongoing cooperative research project that utilizes trained volunteer angler participation to collect scale samples from angler caught steelhead in Minnesota waters of Lake Superior tributaries.

Creel Project (MSCP)

A comprehensive non-scientific poll of catch information similar to what is provided in the Official MNDNR creel reports, we just go a few steps further.

The MSCP is solely funded by Minnesota Steelheader and relies entirely on angling volunteers and their willingness to help gather data to further understand our steelhead

Women on the Fly Clinic
The clinic provides ladies who are interested in steelheading, but have limited experience, an opportunity to gain the perspective and knowledge needed to begin their own steelhead quest.  Taught by women, for women.

Casual Meet & Greets
Our Meet & Greets are casual gatherings of like-minded Minnesota steelhead, trout and salmon anglers.  We typically meet at a local establishment somewhere along the North Shore to chat after a day on the water, meet new friends, laugh with old ones, and share tips, tricks and probably a few lies over a frosty cold beverage.

Winter Shore casting Clinic
Open water winter fishing on Lake Superior.  This clinic is aimed to teach anglers the fundamentals of shore casting the breaks, beaches and shore of Minnesota's Lake Superior shoreline. The clinic focuses on steelhead, coho salmon, and kamloops rainbow trout .

No Treble Hook Campaign

We started work on the No Treble Hooks campaign in 2014. The goal was to provide clarity to an often misunderstood portion of our state fishing regulations. With the ever-growing diversity of travelers and anglers along HWY 61, we concluded a universal symbol with minimal text was needed to provide a clear easy to read message.  We also felt the message needed to delivered at fishing locations. The result was the creation of several dozen aluminum signs.

The sign installation process is near completion, and is targeted at popular stream/river access locations along HWY from Duluth to the Canadian border. This project was created, designed, produced, funded, and installed entirely by Minnesota Steelheader volunteers. It is a collaborative project with the MN DNR and area state park leadership.

We could use some supporters like you.

Projects and Events:

Advocacy and Conservation

In 2011 we advocated for the removal of all wayside parking area trash receptacles between Duluth and Two Harbors.  None of these containers had lids and through our Adopt-a-River clean up efforts, we discovered that much of the trash in these containers were being pulled out into the surroundings by animals.  We reached out to St. Louis County with our request.  Within a couple weeks all the containers at over a dozen locations had been removed. "You brought the trash, take it with you."  We felt scenic parking and overlook areas are not places for garbage collection.  The following year's annual Sucker River clean up resulted in 1/2 the amount of trash collected from the previous year with trash containers in place.

Fisheries Involvement

Minnesota Steelheader were one of several organizations represented on the MN DNR Lake Superior Advisory Group.  The group were selected advisors to assist with the  completion of the 2016 - 2025 Fisheries Management plan for the MN waters of Lake Superior.  We also are represented on the selected R3 council with a goal  of tackling the tough issues of declining involvement in MN Hunting and fishing.  Much of the above project, i.e. sign project, genetics projects, stream clean up and habitat work, also involve working with the MN DNR,

Coaster Brook Trout Genetics Project
This is an ongoing cooperative research project that utilizes trained volunteer angler participation to collect tissue samples from angler caught coaster brook trout in Minnesota waters of Lake Superior tributaries.

Fishing Seminars
Our seminars typically covers what it takes to become a successful steelhead, salmon, and North Shore trout angler. Our speakers range from expert anglers, guides, biologists, educators and DNR specialists.
